Ultimate thirty something Spider-man is clearly the crown jewel of the Ultimate Universe 2.0 then a full 3 story drop, Ultimate Black Panther which explores ancient rivalries between Panther god and Khonshu followed by Ultimates which is a “Meh” take on the Authority…and then Ultimate Manga X-men.
I find it highly ironic that the people who so desperately wanted their married Peter Parker moan and groan about an issue or issues where the family either direct, or extened, are featured and showcased. And Hickman does a good job of making those moments feel real and relevant to the situation of a married man with kids. If you want one you get the other. I got no problem with it, but then again I don't care if Peter is married or not. And no I don't expect in 10 years the Ultimate universe to be here based on how publisher end up handling these alternate worlds to their primary ones. And no this one didn't come close to starting with the talent the original one did. But it is what is it. WTF20.
Speaking for myself, I wanted Peter and MJ together and i was looking forward to family stuff for a change but I also want action. I don't accept that you can't have all of those. It's not terrible or offensive, it ranges from very good to just fine, but I have felt it to be a bit slow at times.

I’m really enjoying USP. I find myself really into Uncle Ben’s and JJJ’s dynamic. I also really like the art, but I will say, whoever does the shading on Messina’s issues is going overboard. I know you’re not a big fan of The Ultimates. I feel like every other issue of that book switches between pretty good, and kinda meh. I do have hope for that series, but I appreciate your issues with it, though. I’ve haven’t read Black Panther or X-Men.
Ultimate Black Panther maybe back to basics in terms of BP stories, but it was a breath of fresh air from the last few runs. Especially the last one that turned Wakanda, into Chicago. And by that i mean the hood 😵💫😵💫😵💫
So far it has been great, story and sales wise, but if you don't like it or believe it, it's your right, but you have to accept that you are in a small minority of fans. For many of us, there is quality here, not just mediocre stories.
They should have made these ultimates do herois things from the beginning, like saving peoples, show the world what they really are, not kill or destroy things

When being pitched Ultimate X-men its a really weird decision to call it X-men??? It's not my kind of thing but seems well made and the art is interesting but the name is a problem.
One major thing that I think your missing here, especially in regards to Ultimate X-Men and Ultimate Black Panther, is their effect on the Makers world, and this is especially highlighted in the new Ultimate Universe One Year In special that came out today, showing the Makers Council and their struggles and plans. Black Panther might be similar to 616, but his shenanigans in Africa are having an effect on Ra and Konshu and their hold on Africa. We see what's happening in Ultimate X-Men is growing in importance with the councils plans for mutants. In isolation, Black Panther and X-Men may be boring or irrelevant, but if your paying attention to the wider story (which I think is very compelling) then you can appreciate those titles a bit more. I agree it shouldn't be called X-Men though. Probably should be New Mutants.
However, there's a continuity problem. Ra and Khonshu were recently defeated and killed by a now magically empowered BP, and yet they show up alive and well in the One Year In issue, watching Nick fury fail Spectacularly in trying to take them all out
It's not just the content but, the comics themselves are starting to decline in quality. In this month alone I had to replace 4 of my new Ultimate Comics because their center pages tore right off the binding staples. Is this just happening to me?! This happened a few years back with DC as well but, now it's all bad quality Marvel books. Please let me know anyone out there reading physical books! On that note I just officially dumped Incredible Hulk. After 19 issues and the start of a new arc with 20...just don't know where this story is going anymore. I am done.

The first 12-20 issues with Mark Millar were some of the best post 90s X-men comics overall (which isn't the highest bar but it's something) and better than any recent X-men since Brubaker and Remender left Marvel years ago.

Ultimate Black Panther has been very boring by design, I don't understand T'Challa's reluctance to fight Moon Knight. It hasn't made any sense whatsoever but it does seem they are fighting by issue 12, I hope it's well done. I will say that the last issue released, 10 I think, was easily the best issue yet but funny enough was focused on the Sorcerer Supreme chick and not T'Challa.
He, in fact, did not, Khonshu and Black Panther are going to finally fight in issue #12, we are only on #10, the solicit for #13 does say Khonshu is defeated but makes no mention of his death and nothing at all has happened or even been mentioned happening to Ra.
I only read issue one of the ultimates i more just found it boring, was hoping that hank pym would get kind of a redemption arc since the 616 and original ultimate universe counterparts have been so trashed on. Ultimate spiderman is really good, but i think youre going to have to read it the same way bendis ultimate spiderman was intended which was definitely a trade wait. Superhero books dont need to be constant hitting and punching and superhero work i like slow burns that have an almost cinematic quality instead of just action packed comics. I think hickmans one of the best writers marvel has rn and i cant wait to read more. Havent read ultimate xmen or black panther, im actually glad ultimate xmen is vastly different, when i read new universes like this that are ongoing my expectation is that there are huge differences and not just basic 616 shenanigans. Idk i just find it weird that you think black panther isnt different enough but the xmen book is TOO different. If its not xmen enough for you go read the mainline xmen book.

The Ultimate universe needs a more cohesive vision. I don’t think Hickman does from what I’ve read. Ultimate Spider-Man - Needs way more Spider-Man adventures driven by some purpose. Not just the “I always felt something was missing”. We need a REASON for Peter to go out there and risk his life and his family! Even if it was a mid crisis choice give us some drama and stakes. To me stuff is just happening. Also less supporting character focus. Ultimates: it’s just all wrong. From top to bottom needs a major overhaul, beginning with what kind of Avengers story are we looking to tell. Ultimate Black Panther: Just more average Wakanda storytelling. Again too much about supporting characters not enough focus on what would make Black Panther his ULTIMATE version. I would like it to go back to Kirby’s take. Ultimate X-Men: I think this could easily pivot into an superhero comic but you have a language and cultural difference here and I don’t know how good the “translator/writer” is on directing Peach. I don’t know what changed from Demon Wars/Demon Days, but it looks like they just wanted to let Peach do what she wanted. The only prompt Hickman gave her seems to be what if the X-Men began in Japan. Anyway, there’s no real direction for these titles and that’s why they feel unsubstantial. If rumors are true and Millar is given the reigns to direct and delegate I think we could have some must-read books.
Nah. Judging by the fact that big news Millar replied was Godzilla/Marvel crossover, he won’t direct Ultimate universe anytime soon. Even if he did, he still shallow shadow of his former self
As someone who didn't experience the 1st ultimate universe I was really looking forward to this one. TBH, other than ult. Spidey, it's been disappointing. Dropped "x-men" after issue 4, BP at 10, but still grabbing ultimates only bcuz of 1st appearances, and still going wit Spiderman. So yeah, not nearly as good as that article claims. Imho.
Hey Wes. A couple of days ago, I noticed several people shilling the new Ultimates on X. The timing was weird, I can't help but wonder if it's on purpose. Several of them were dissing Millar's run too, which annoyed me, but also made me wonder if it's a generational thing.
I stayed with Ultimate X-Men for 7 issues and couldn't take anymore. Looking at it as an Ultimate Runawys/New Mutants made it better but couldn't make up for the bad writing and blatant sexism.

There is no male character that is a hero, a good or even likable person, she made every male a piece of crap in some way or another, except maybe her friend Subassa (I think that's his name) but she made him a weak minded boy that offed himself. Even the one hero that is supposed to be male, Cyclops, has been gender swapped to be a chick instead. Peach not having anything good she can possibly bring herself to write about a male character is a very misandristic view of the world that she has put into her book, and quite frankly, I've always thought better of her than that, but I was obviously wrong, I will not support that kind of hateful crap, even from an artist I really like. It's too bad she can't be better than that, I was enjoying all the Japanese cultural stuff she was putting into the book.

I'd say one year later, Ultimate Universe 2.0 is just ok, USM is the only one book that is good, though it's slow burn. The rest are either weak (but not bad!) or just starting to be middling (UBP, UXM)
Boring to bad? With the exception of Spider man? Really? I mean UXM is the slowest of burns but it’s getting pretty horrific and wild currently. Each issue has gotten better. The one year in special was pretty fun.. Ultimates is a lot of things but boring isn’t one of em. (Except for the latest issue which was actually kind of boring/ bad I’ll admit) idk to each their own I guess. It’s certainly better than 616 and I don’t think it’s a close contest.
USM is the best. I am impressed cause I think of Hickman as the secret history, science and kings dude. The Anti Bendis so to speak. Big Ideas not Family and Street Ultimate X-men is very unique. More Runaways less X-men...Wolverine should be a more traditional book. Or at least has more traditional mutants. Ultimate Black Panther is okaynothing special but much better then the T'Challa we have been getting in his 616 Solo. Here is King, a super genius and not a bitch. I think this book desperately needs mini bosses and a kinda Warfact III or Total War Feel. Legendary Heroes lead unique armies in the fields. Ultimates feels like Krakoa Era X-men which is to say your politics will greatly impact how you feel.
Ultimate Spider-Man might be slow, but it's a great status quo so I don't mind. Ultimate X-Men is different, but still great as a manga. Ultimates might be over-the-top, but still less than where the original Ultimates ended up under Millar and company, so I don't feel as cynical as you do towards it.
The Ultimate Marvel Comics Universe Version 2.0 should be trying to stay away from any kind of edge lord storytelling. They should concentrate on stories that are very much the opposite of any of the edgy nonsense that the Ultimate Universe Version 1.0 is known for showing.
I think that kinda the point? Maker didn’t interfered with Wakanda history and considering 6160 was 1:1 to 616 before Maker arrival, T’Challa backstory played out expected
I felt the same but just sat down and read through all 12 issues. It's a great read through. Yeah it's slow but the set up is going somewhere based on Hickmans past work, he's made the characters three dimensional and he writes the nest parker characterisation. Don't drop it yet I would suggest.
I don't get the love of Ultimate Spider-Man, I mean it's nice Parker has a family, but that shouldn't be the most important thing. It's a boring book. No major fights, no real victories, just more Jonathon Hickman House of X worthless blather and pointless world building in a genre built around ACTION. MJ and his kids, unless they're in danger should be the LEAST interesting part of Spider-Man's life.
Wes, 67 yo, 62 year comic reader (learned to read around 6 years old, my big brother had a bunch of comics) enjoying your critiques (Aaaaarrgghhh!). You feel let down by comics: imagine if, in your tender youth, you were enchanted by collections of Curt Swan's World's Finest and the early Legion of Super-Heroes. I was lucky to enjoy the awesome comics explosion of the 60s and 70s (almost all super hero books) and some of the innovations of the 80s. (Let us not speak of the 90s). Your recommendations have led me to some good reads I'd missed over the past 30 years. I've read all the Image GI Joe (and related titles) & Transformers on your recommendation: that stuff bored me. They seem well enough written (I guess) but I have not enjoyed the art (especially in Transformers) or found the stories engaging. Destro engaged my attention more than the other stuff but not by much (what's under that mask?? the mask bleeds and heals??). Maybe a history with those characters would've made for a different experience?Void Rivals (so far barely related to the above) has tickled my fancy: story, dialogue and especially art. You're dead right about Legion fans: we die hard. PS: Ultimate X-men is (as you say) NOT X-men.
Deniz Camp is a complete hack as a writer, I gave him a fair shot through the 1st 6 issues but couldn't take his ignorance any longer. All the story ideas sounded good, but he always screwed them up, injecting far left weird crap into his work, so happy I dropped that garbage.
I hope they cancel Ultimate X-Girls (pretending to be "X-Men"), after the release of Ultimate Wolverine. One of the best things about the original Ultimate Universe was that I could afford to buy all books each month, on a high schooler's budget! Thanks to only having to buy 3-4 books a month! If they begin to publish more than 4 books, it will break the bank for a lot of potential new readers! Plus Peach Momoko's book suck balls!

Ultimate X-Men are the only weak link until it's fixed with the ultimate event in early spring.
The Ultimate universe needs a more cohesive vision. I don’t think Hickman does from what I’ve read.
Ultimate Spider-Man - Needs way more Spider-Man adventures driven by some purpose. Not just the “I always felt something was missing”. We need a REASON for Peter to go out there and risk his life and his family! Even if it was a mid crisis choice give us some drama and stakes. To me stuff is just happening. Also less supporting character focus.
Ultimates: it’s just all wrong. From top to bottom needs a major overhaul, beginning with what kind of Avengers story are we looking to tell.
Ultimate Black Panther: Just more average Wakanda storytelling. Again too much about supporting characters not enough focus on what would make Black Panther his ULTIMATE version. I would like it to go back to Kirby’s take.
Ultimate X-Men: I think this could easily pivot into an superhero comic but you have a language and cultural difference here and I don’t know how good the “translator/writer” is on directing Peach. I don’t know what changed from Demon Wars/Demon Days, but it looks like they just wanted to let Peach do what she wanted. The only prompt Hickman gave her seems to be what if the X-Men began in Japan.
Anyway, there’s no real direction for these titles and that’s why they feel unsubstantial.
If rumors are true and Millar is given the reigns to direct and delegate I think we could have some must-read books.
Nah. Judging by the fact that big news Millar replied was Godzilla/Marvel crossover, he won’t direct Ultimate universe anytime soon. Even if he did, he still shallow shadow of his former self
As someone who didn't experience the 1st ultimate universe I was really looking forward to this one. TBH, other than ult. Spidey, it's been disappointing. Dropped "x-men" after issue 4, BP at 10, but still grabbing ultimates only bcuz of 1st appearances, and still going wit Spiderman. So yeah, not nearly as good as that article claims. Imho.
Hey Wes. A couple of days ago, I noticed several people shilling the new Ultimates on X. The timing was weird, I can't help but wonder if it's on purpose.
Several of them were dissing Millar's run too, which annoyed me, but also made me wonder if it's a generational thing.
I stayed with Ultimate X-Men for 7 issues and couldn't take anymore. Looking at it as an Ultimate Runawys/New Mutants made it better but couldn't make up for the bad writing and blatant sexism.

There is no male character that is a hero, a good or even likable person, she made every male a piece of crap in some way or another, except maybe her friend Subassa (I think that's his name) but she made him a weak minded boy that offed himself. Even the one hero that is supposed to be male, Cyclops, has been gender swapped to be a chick instead. Peach not having anything good she can possibly bring herself to write about a male character is a very misandristic view of the world that she has put into her book, and quite frankly, I've always thought better of her than that, but I was obviously wrong, I will not support that kind of hateful crap, even from an artist I really like. It's too bad she can't be better than that, I was enjoying all the Japanese cultural stuff she was putting into the book.
@@wmwhitedevilshe is writing from a Japanese point of view. The reason why all males are portrayed as evil is Japan is a very male-centric country and men have the absolute say in everything there and over women's lives since feudal times
I'd say one year later, Ultimate Universe 2.0 is just ok, USM is the only one book that is good, though it's slow burn. The rest are either weak (but not bad!) or just starting to be middling (UBP, UXM)
Boring to bad? With the exception of Spider man? Really? I mean UXM is the slowest of burns but it’s getting pretty horrific and wild currently. Each issue has gotten better. The one year in special was pretty fun.. Ultimates is a lot of things but boring isn’t one of em. (Except for the latest issue which was actually kind of boring/ bad I’ll admit) idk to each their own I guess. It’s certainly better than 616 and I don’t think it’s a close contest.
USM is the best. I am impressed cause I think of Hickman as the secret history, science and kings dude. The Anti Bendis so to speak. Big Ideas not Family and Street
Ultimate X-men is very unique. More Runaways less X-men...Wolverine should be a more traditional book. Or at least has more traditional mutants.
Ultimate Black Panther is okaynothing special but much better then the T'Challa we have been getting in his 616 Solo. Here is King, a super genius and not a bitch. I think this book desperately needs mini bosses and a kinda Warfact III or Total War Feel. Legendary Heroes lead unique armies in the fields.
Ultimates feels like Krakoa Era X-men which is to say your politics will greatly impact how you feel.
This new Ultimate universe pails in comparison to the original. At least Black Panther can talk this time around.

Ultimate Spider-Man might be slow, but it's a great status quo so I don't mind. Ultimate X-Men is different, but still great as a manga. Ultimates might be over-the-top, but still less than where the original Ultimates ended up under Millar and company, so I don't feel as cynical as you do towards it.
Yeah, Perch's taste in comics is very hit or miss
The Ultimate Marvel Comics Universe Version 2.0 should be trying to stay away from any kind of edge lord storytelling. They should concentrate on stories that are very much the opposite of any of the edgy nonsense that the Ultimate Universe Version 1.0 is known for showing.

I think that kinda the point? Maker didn’t interfered with Wakanda history and considering 6160 was 1:1 to 616 before Maker arrival, T’Challa backstory played out expected
Only ultimate book I pick up is spideman but it’s been a snooze fest might drop it def trimming the fat next year on titles to much woke 💩
I felt the same but just sat down and read through all 12 issues. It's a great read through. Yeah it's slow but the set up is going somewhere based on Hickmans past work, he's made the characters three dimensional and he writes the nest parker characterisation. Don't drop it yet I would suggest.
Personally I’ve been enjoying the Ultimate universe across the board. Though I will say I wish that Ultimate Black Panther upped the pacing.
I don't get the love of Ultimate Spider-Man, I mean it's nice Parker has a family, but that shouldn't be the most important thing. It's a boring book. No major fights, no real victories, just more Jonathon Hickman House of X worthless blather and pointless world building in a genre built around ACTION. MJ and his kids, unless they're in danger should be the LEAST interesting part of Spider-Man's life.

67 yo, 62 year comic reader (learned to read around 6 years old, my big brother had a bunch of comics) enjoying your critiques (Aaaaarrgghhh!). You feel let down by comics: imagine if, in your tender youth, you were enchanted by collections of Curt Swan's World's Finest and the early Legion of Super-Heroes.
I was lucky to enjoy the awesome comics explosion of the 60s and 70s (almost all super hero books) and some of the innovations of the 80s. (Let us not speak of the 90s).
Your recommendations have led me to some good reads I'd missed over the past 30 years. I've read all the Image GI Joe (and related titles) & Transformers on your recommendation: that stuff bored me. They seem well enough written (I guess) but I have not enjoyed the art (especially in Transformers) or found the stories engaging. Destro engaged my attention more than the other stuff but not by much (what's under that mask?? the mask bleeds and heals??). Maybe a history with those characters would've made for a different experience?Void Rivals (so far barely related to the above) has tickled my fancy: story, dialogue and especially art.

Deniz Camp is a complete hack as a writer, I gave him a fair shot through the 1st 6 issues but couldn't take his ignorance any longer. All the story ideas sounded good, but he always screwed them up, injecting far left weird crap into his work, so happy I dropped that garbage.
Ultimate universe is hot garbage. All of it.

I hope they cancel Ultimate X-Girls (pretending to be "X-Men"), after the release of Ultimate Wolverine. One of the best things about the original Ultimate Universe was that I could afford to buy all books each month, on a high schooler's budget! Thanks to only having to buy 3-4 books a month! If they begin to publish more than 4 books, it will break the bank for a lot of potential new readers! Plus Peach Momoko's book suck balls!
I laugh a bit at the end when you do your pitch on your "love for the comic book medium." Outside of Ultimate Spider-Man, all you did was dump on every book. I didn't realize that was love. I went away for a bit because I got tired of the negativity that is in just about every video. Not saying you have to like things if you don't but personally attacking creators who are trying to tell a story and then saying anyone who likes a certain title is an idiot...yeah, I'm done. I'll stay one of those idiots that is actually enjoying The Ultimates. Sorry you see it as a joke.
